Global Consumer Brands Unveil World’s First Enzymatically Recycled Bottles
The dream of bringing recycled PET plastics is now becoming true as the Consortium – a group of global brands such as Carbios, L’Oreal, Nestle Waters, PepsiCo, and Suntory Beverage and Food Europe – has planned to produce the world’s first grade PET plastic bottles, which are the first enzymatically recycled bottles.
The announcement was made after 10 years of research and development by Carbios to cumulatively create a process that with the help of an enzyme breaks down organic plant parts into compost. This would be a significant achievement in reducing plastic pollution that has plagued every corner of the planet.

This enzyme has been fine-tuned with sufficient research, strong enough to break down any kind of PET plastics into its primary state, which can be reused like new, high-quality plastic.
The usual enzymes in soil are incompetent to recycle plastic due to the complex structure of PET plastic. However, this patented enzyme PET recycling process by Carbios will help to repurpose the plastic into its virgin food quality.
The PET plastics which would otherwise go to waste are now reused in the process, creating an endless circular system of recycling plastics. If this is achieved at a greater scale and with efficiency, the need to produce new plastics would be stopped in less than 16 hours, creating a massive, radical change.
This would make the process ten thousand times efficient than any other plastic recycling project taken up to date.
Another notable aspect of Carbios’ recycling process is that it works under mild conditions, which means that it would have a low carbon footprint from recycling PET waste treatment and would reduce at least 30% of the carbon emissions.
This partnership is a growing trend of the businesses towards sustainability and creating more such circular models of economy to make sure that less waste is produced on the run.
