Most watchmakers don’t clamor to associate themselves with plastic for obvious reasons. But when plastic utilization is for the good, its use feels a lot more meaningful. Aiming to work on its ecological ethics, Baume & Mercier has recently created a new Baume Ocean II watch made from upcycled marine plastic. By adding recovered plastic debris from the oceans, the company wants to contribute to planet conservation.

For this initiative, they collaborated with the Spanish organization Seaqual Initiative and the Belgian NGO Waste Free Oceans (WFO). Being a pioneer in implementing the principle of plastic upcycling in the luxury world, Baume & Mercier proudly supports this global action. Hence, it gives a new dimension to the watchmaking process. Their vision comprises bold design and respect for the environment while following traditions.

Besides the noble initiative, the brand has also paid special attention to maintaining the high quality, performance, and durability of the new Ocean II watch. The watch case boasts a recycled plastic cover produced by WFO. It comprises 80 percent of plastic waste collected by the NGO and also includes 20 percent fiberglass for reinforcing its resistance.

The Baume Ocean II watch is precisely assembled at the brand’s watchmaking workshop at Les Brenets in Swiss Jaura. Hence, it boasts reliable Swiss made self-winding mechanical movement and comes integrated with a 38-hour power reserve. The timepiece is also water-resistant for up to 30-meter, so you won’t have to worry about the odd scuba dive or dunk in the swimming pool.

The watch exudes more panache, as it’s made using 100 percent upcycled marine plastic and comes with a woven strap that includes upcycled PET with over-stitching in a light blue hue. The edge further has a black cork lining for enhanced comfort while wearing. Its interchangeable strap is easy to detach and change – thanks to its recycled walnut buttons. Therefore, swapping the strap is as easy as unbuttoning a shirt.

If you buy the Baume Ocean II watch for $1,700, the brand will donate 5 percent of the proceeds to its partners, Seaqual Initiative and Waste Free Oceans. The 5 percent donation amount is about the five oceans on the earth. Hence, together they will combat marine pollution and help save marine life from plastic’s harmful impacts.
