At an event commemorating the 50th World Environment Day, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India has successfully achieved its target to create 10 percent ethanol blending in petrol. According to PM Modi, the task is completed five months before its November 2022 target.
Modi also mentioned that it’s indeed a big accomplishment for India because in the financial year (FY) 2013-2014 ethanol blending in petrol was just 1.5 percent and around 5 percent in FY 2019-2020. This huge announcement was made during his speech during the Save Soil Movement programme on World Environment Day 2022.
Ethanol blending is a process of ethyl alcohol blending. This alcohol is 99 percent pure and often derived from agricultural products, particularly petrol. Besides the decrease in carbon emissions, it can even help increase self-reliance, energy security, greater investment opportunities, increased farmers’ incomes, and better utilization of damaged food grains.
Apart from this achievement, the PM also declared that India’s other accomplishment was to reach 40 percent of installed electric capacity using non-fossil fuel sources. The country has achieved this target around 9 years ahead of schedule. Even the country’s solar energy capacity has been enhanced by 18 times.
This achievement in the course of the last 8 years has not only augmented India’s energy security but also translated into a forex impact of over Rs.41,500 crores. Meanwhile, the country has also managed to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by around 27 lakh MT. With such initiatives by the Indian Government, now PM Modi believes that the EBP programme is on the right track to achieve its goal of 20 percent blending by 2025-26.
