Prime Minister Narendra Modi has virtually launched Asia’s biggest bio-CNG plant in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore. The initiative has been called an imperative step to tackle the waste generated from houses, farms and animals. According to Modi, the plant also supports the mission of “cleaner urban spaces under the principle of Waste to Wealth.”
Named ‘Gobar-Dhan,’ the plant has a capacity to process about 550 tonnes of segregated wet organic waste and generate about 17,000 kg CNG and 100 tonnes of organic compost on a daily basis. Before the launch of this plant, the country had 17 operational bio-GNG plants with a combined capacity of 46,178 kg per day. The plant is also expected to help reduce carbon emissions, and offer green energy along with organic compost as fertiliser.
Modi said;
In the coming two years, work is being done to build such Gobar-Dhan Bio-CNG plants in 75 major municipal bodies of the country. This campaign will go a long way in making India’s cities clean, pollution-free, clean energy.
Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri also attended the virtual inauguration event. The initiative is in line with Modi’s aim to create “garbage-free cities” under the Swachh Bharat Missions Urban 2.0, which was launched in October 2021.
Under the Centre’s guidelines, the plant has been set up by the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) with an initial investment of Rs. 550 crore. Moreover, the IMC would buy the bio-CNG at Rs. 5 per kg, which would be used to fuel nearly 400 buses every day starting May 2022. As per Madhya Pradesh CM, cow-dung will be purchased from the nearby villages to provide the essential bacteria for the decomposition of the garbage.
