PSA Peugeot Citroën, French multinational automobiles manufacturer has developed an all-new technology in the field of environment-friendly vehicles which combines a Gasoline internal combustion engine with compressed air. The Hybrid Air engine system is a great step towards the need of energy-efficient vehicles and also looks into challenges such as greenhouse gas and the pollutants reduction. The system combines a petrol engine, compressed air cylinders, a hydraulic motor-pump assembly and an automatic transmission. The smart control system adjusts the operating mode as per driver’s requirements allowing it to work efficiently in all three modes: compressed air, petrol internal combustion and combination of both.

For cars such as Citroën C3 or Peugeot 208, the hybrid engine system will give 69g CO2/km homologated performance. The technology will be saving 45% fuel while driving in city offering incredible fuel economy of 2.9 l/100 km. As per claims of the company, the cars could be achieving an average of 117 miles a gallon by 2020. Besides being fuel efficient, eco-friendly and upgraded with all the latest technology, the Hybrid Air system are affordable as well. Vehicles fitted with this technology will cost about $2000 less than cars with conventional hybrid systems. Hopefully, we will see cars with Hybrid Air system in the market by 2016.
