Wind turbine maker Siemens Gamesa has installed the first RecyclableBlades at the Kaskasi offshore wind farm in Germany. RecyclableBlades is the world’s first recyclable wind turbine blades that are up and running now. Thanks to the use of 100 percent recyclable blades, the materials are easy to separate at the end of their life cycle; they can be either dismantled or recycled for new applications.
In collaboration with Taiwanese specialty chemicals manufacturer Swancor Holding Co Ltd, Siemens Gamesa has created the first six 81-meter long RecyclableBlades at their factory in Aalborg, Denmark.
According to Andreas Nauen, CEO of Siemens Gamesa, it’s high time to work on the climate emergency and we all must do it in a very holistic manner. With the creation of recyclable wind turbine blades, the company is aiming to care for the environment. RecyclableBlade is a great epitome of how the company is working on advanced technologies for a greener future for the wind industry.
Until now, the use of composite materials to make wind turbine blades have made it hard to recycle them. But with this new renewable material, it would be easier to recycle unused parts later on.\
Siemens Gamesa is also working with EDF Renewables for deploying various sets of recyclable blades at the offshore wind farm in the future. With this, they are aiming to come up with some advanced recycling technology solutions in this sector. EDF Renewables’ team is eager to work on this pioneering technology with their suppliers.
Now, they want to focus on the constant improvement of the environmental sustainability of the projects. This is being done to conciliate low-carbon electricity production to benefit the climate while decreasing the impacts on the local environment.
