The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has organized a meet of more than 200 scientists from 65 countries – to be conducted from September 30 to October 4, 2019, in New Delhi to bring out the next report on the present status of climate change. The meeting is hosted by the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate change, Government of India.
Experts from the IPCC will meet to advance their work on the Working Group III contribution to the Sixth Assessment Report. They will start preparing a first draft of the report which is due to be finalized in July 2021.
IPCC Working Group III is accountable for evaluating the mitigation of climate change. It will assess the responses and solutions to the threats posed due to climate change by reducing emissions and declining the greenhouse gases that are responsible for global warming.
The Sixth Assessment Report will study topics such as the link between consumption and behavior and greenhouse gas emissions, and the role of innovation and technology. The report will try and assess the connection between short and medium-term actions and their compatibility with long-term temperature goals set in the Paris Agreement.
The three IPCC Working Groups will submit their findings to the Sixth Assessment Report in 2021. An integrated and revised Synthesis Report will also be released in 2022. It will be released in time to inform the 2023 global stocktake by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) when countries will review progress towards the Paris Agreement goal of keeping global warming to well below 2°C while pursuing efforts to limit it to 1.5°C.
