A 21-year-old youngster took the massive initiative of collecting temple waste from a nearby lake and recycling it into exquisite artifacts with the help of prison inmates. Akash Singh is not only contributing to reducing the quantity of temple waste dumped in the lake but has also offered work opportunities for prisoners, who often find it hard to find some work.
Singh never was very much into studying but had a keen interest in science and innovation, and was always intrigued to explore something new.
After completing his tenth grade, Akash joined a three-year diploma program in Civil Engineering at the well-known Manesar Polytechnic Education Society in Gurgaon. In the year 2018, he build his own company named, Energinee Innovations.
Because of his love for nature, he used to frequently visit a newly formed lake around the Shani temple with his friends but with time its condition kept worsening. Akash looked into the matter and came up with a creative idea.
Singh explains;
I came up with the concept of recycling waste materials to create miracles, but I lacked a team. This difficulty was quickly solved when I began working with the prison inmates; this notion not just to help the lakes around the temples thrive, but also drew me closer to the innocent souls behind bars.
The incubation center helped him contact the GB Nagar District Jail, where he began a 15-day trial along with the other 22 prisoners. They started off by accumulating waste from 152 temples in the Delhi/NCR area.
Initially, he planned to recycle temple waste in some way so that water contamination could be reduced. Later he figured out that a mixture of coconut husk and ash generates a robust binder that could be molded into figures.
A documentary, “Ashes to idols” directed by Rahul Ranjan is inspired by Akash’s work, which is now trending on Amazon Prime.
As of now, Akash has taught around 46 convicts to make approximately sixty types of artifacts. The youngster is indeed inspirational for our society, we definitely need more people like him.

Almost everyone has become self-centered despite the fact that our lives are directly linked with the environment and it significantly affects the way we live, too. More or less, it is everyone’s sole responsibility to do something for the betterment of nature with compassion, just like Akash has been doing.
